D) is my answer...
My approach is convert the whole figure into a square...
What u get is now a rectangle of dimension 12 x 4.
Its area comes out to be 48.
Line BEC is its diagonal.
So to calculate the area of triangle AEC...we take into consideration only half of the rectangle's area =24.
Now make another rectangle by line A'D'.Its area comes out to be 36 coz the dimension is 9x4.
Again if we see the figure,AC is diagonal and divides the rectangle area into half portion of 18.
Deduct this 18 from 24...Now we are left with area of figure ABEC which is 6.
Now going by POE the only answers left are 4.5 & 3.
Since traingle AEB is smaller. The answer i reach to is D.

It may be a long explanation but i cud not draw the figure...Please confirm if this approach was in rite direction.... or not
