CR July 21st 2008 - Cezanne's art and modernism 1 Month ago Karma: 14
1 .

Cezanne's art inspired the next generation of artists., 20th century modernist creators of abstract art. While most experts rank Cezanne as an early modernist, a small few reject this idea. Francoise Cachin, for example, bluntly states that such an a_script_ion is "overplayed", and says that Cezanne's work is "too often observed from a modern point of view."

Which one of the following statements is most strongl;y supported by the information above?

(a) Cezanne's work is highly controversial.
(b) Cezanne was an early creator of abstract art.
(c) Cezanne's work helped to develop modernism.
(d) Modern art owes less to Cezanne than many experts believe.
(e) Cezanne's work tends to be misinterpreted as modernist.

Please discuss the answer choice while explaining.

2.

Beverage Company representative:
The plastic rings that hold six-packs of beverage cans together pose a threat to wild animals, which often become entangled in the discarded rings and suffocate as a result. Following our lead, all beverage companies will soon use only those rings consisting of a new plastic that disintegrates after only three days' exposure to sunlight. Once we all complete the switchover from the old to the new plastic rings, therefore, the threat of suffocation that plastic rings pose to wild animal will be eliminated.

Which one of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the representative's argument?

(a) The switchover to the new plastic rings will take at least two more years to complete.
(b) After the beverage company has switched over to the new plastic rings, a substantial amount of the old plastic rings will persisit in most aquatic and woodland environments.
(c) The new plastic rings are slightly more expensive than the old rings.
(d) The new plastic rings rarely disintegrate during shipping of beverage six-packs because most trucks that transport canned beverages protect their cargo from sunlight.
(e) The new plastic rings disintegrate into substances that are harmful to aquatic animals when ingested in substantial quantities by them.

Please discuss the answer choice while explaining.

Hey Rahul,

I the answer to be
D

E

D : As we are supposed to conclude the sentence and find the strongest statement which the argument supports, D summarises the whole statement

Can you please explain why the ans is C

2nd Question:
E : Even if the plan is implemented there is no use, as even in that case the plastic is going to harm the wild animals ....

The controversy in the stimulus is abt categorization of Cezanne as an artist, and not about Cezanne's art. Also a small few of the critics reject the idea of Cezanne as an inspiration of modern art. Hence not (A).
Nothing abt Cezanne being an early creator of abstract art in the stimulus. Hence not B. Similarly the reason for not choosing D.

The word "tends" is the problem with option E. Logically "tends" mean "most". The stimulus disagrees with this view as only a few reject the categorization of CEzanne as a modernist wheres the majority accepts it. E also involves all interpretation of CEzanne's work - whether by art expert or not - and from this view the answer is still unsupported since the views of others is not discussed in thye stimulus.

Option (C) is in fact the paraphrase of the first sentence. This is a "must be true" kind of question where we do not question the stimulus. The stimulus is considered to be true where as the choices are to be critcally examined.
The deceptiveness lies in the word "develop". This might sound too strong, but if CEzanne inspired the creators of modern art, then he must have helped develop it.

Hence (C).

Note: The explanation above is the precis of the explanation given for the OA.

This type of question relates to the family where the question stem is true while the stimulus has to be critically examined. This is a different type of question than the first type.

The conclusion is specific about suffocation, but E does not mention abt that. No mention abt aquatic animals in the stimulus too.
Option B on the other hand, undermines the rep's conclusion. Also the rep does not mentio anything abt new plastic rings. He/she talks abt plastic rings in general which will have both old and new plastic rings.

Hence option B.

Hope the explanations answers your query.

Cheers,
Rahul.
